Zanokuhle Mbatha was released from custody on November 11, 2014 after the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court reached a decision that the police and the prosecution no longer had reason to continue holding him in connection with the murder of Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana captain and goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa. Suspects in the shooting of Senzo MeyiwaOn Friday October 31, 2014 South Africans were caught off-guard when when reports emerged that a suspect named Zanokuhle Mbatha had appeared in court in connection with the murder of Senzo Meyiwa.

At the time, the news of the arrest and court appearance of Zanokuhle Mbatha appeared less than truthful as police continually denied having a suspect in custody.

This was later confirmed as true; it was further reported that Zanokuhle Mbatha was positively identified in the identity parade and will remain in custody until his next court appearance which was scheduled for November 11, 2014 and he appeared in court only to be released amid continued claims of his innocence from himself and his loved ones.

Suspect in the shooting of Senzo MeyiwaAccording to SAPA, the charges against Zanokuhle Mbatha were withdrawn – legally, withdrawn means the suspect may not be brought back to face the same charges again.

Addressing the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday November 11, 2014 Magistrate Daniel Thulare was quoted saying “from the submissions made by prosecutor Getrude Market the court has accepted that as of now there is not sufficient evidence to put Mr Mbatha to trial.”

“I note the withdrawal of charges by the State against Mbatha and consequently the court orders the release of Mr Mbatha today.”

Senzo Meyiwa was shot and pronounced dead on arrival at hospital on Sunday October 26, 2014 in Vosloorus, Gauteng at his girlfriend’s (Kelly Khumalo) house.
