Vladimir Vermezović, famed former Kaizer Chiefs coach who was fired after the team fell on hard times at the height of Orlando Pirates glory, lost his first Soweto Derby as Pirates Coach.

While at Chiefs, Vermezović registered some of the most emphatic and famous Soweto Derby victories when he beat Pirates 3-1 and 3-0 in matches that were less than 30 days apart.

In his last Soweto Derby as Chiefs coach, Vermezović was on the losing side when he suffered a 3-2 defeat.

Nearly two years since leaving Chiefs and South Africa, to everybody’s surprise, Vermezović, affectionately known as VV in South African football quarters, was announced as Pirates coach on February 14, 2014.

He only coached his first game nearly 30 days later since he was first revealed as Roger De Sá’s replacement.

Playing against another Soweto rival, Moroka Swallows, the match took place just three days ahead of the high profile Soweto Derby.

Armed with former Chiefs striker, Lehlohonolo Majoro, VV’s Pirates was not good enough for the high flying Glamor Boys whose Katsande broke the deadlock on the 61st minute to no reply.

Katsande’s goal was enough to see Chiefs open a 13 point gap between them and their arch-rivals.
