Vavi urged Mbalula to intervene in 10111 strike

South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) Secretary General Zwelinzima Vavi has called on Police Minister Fikile Mbalula to urgently intervene in the 10111 call centre operators strike as soon as possible. Over 5 000 call centre agents have been on strike for two days over wages.

“The chance of the police finding perpetrators of violence, the chance of the police securing a conviction in court, which they rely on is the evidence provided by these call centres. Because every call we make to the 10111 is recorded. And can be used in court. It means that all of a sudden for two days those victims of crime will have no access to justice whatsoever.

“Our plea to the minister, deep down in your conscience, find a reason why you should call a meeting tomorrow with these leaders of the union to make sure that the strike doesn’t go any further,” South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) Secretary General Zwelinzima Vavi said.
