The 154th Soweto Derby postponed in the wake of Senzo Meyiwa’s death

The 154th Soweto Derby has been postponed in the wake of Senzo Meyiwa‘s death, this is according to the chief executive officer of the Premier Soccer League of South Africa (PSL), Brand de Villiers. Google+

Senzo MeyiwaBrand de Villiers told the gathered media at the Orlando Pirates conference called to address the shooting and death of – as well as pay tribute to – Senzo Meyiwa.

Speaking at the Orlando Pirates conference at Rand Stadium in Rosettenville, Johannesburg in Gauteng, Brand de Villiers was quoted saying  “Out of respect for Senzo, the Derby match will not take place this weekend. We will communicate the logistics in due time”.

The 154th Soweto Derby would have formed part (when played would still be) of round 10 of the 2014/15 Absa Premiership matches.

Senzo Meyiwa was the goalkeeper and captain of Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana.

He was shot on Sunday night of October 26, 2014 in Vosloorus outside Johannesburg in Gauteng province of South Africa at Kelly Khumalo‘s house during a failed robbery.

Senzo Meyiwa and Kelly Khumalo had been frequenting the news in recent months and it is understood that she recently mothered Senzo Meyiwa’s child.

Kelly Khumalo is the famed South African musician and actress who attracted a lot of controversy at the height of her career.

When two of three men entered Kelly Khumalo‘s house and demanded cellphones, money and other valuables – one of them pointed a gun at her – at which point Senzo Meyiwa tried to protect her.

He was shot through the chest and was rushed to hospital, Senzo Meyiwa was pronounced dead on arrival.

The three suspects fled on foot, the South African Police Service (SAPS) is offering R150 000 to the person (s) with information that may lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.
