Thando Thabethe

Thando Thabethe is a South African radio DJ, actress and television personality. She was the of YFM’s Audio Treat before moving to SABC Radio’s 5FM. Thando Thabethe stars as Thando Nkosi on SABC 1’s sitcom, My Perfect Family and as Nolwazi on SABC 1’s Generations.

Thando Thabethe was born and raised in the Johannesburg township of Soweto in the Gauteng province of South Africa.

Her father committed suicide when she was just thirteen years old, she revealed this in a letter to a 16 year old self, “It would have been three years since my father had passed away from suicide, when I was 16, and it was something I was battling with,” Thando Thabethe wrote.

“I lost my father at 13, a very young age. I think as you grow older you realise how much you actually missed out on when you lose your father at 13… I’m yet to get married, so one day hopefully if it happens, I would have liked if he would have been there…” she told Pearl Modiadie on Zaziwa.

She also revealed that her father was abusive towards her mother, “honestly, it was episodes that happened constantly. Maybe once a month if we’re lucky,” she said speaking to Pearl Modiadie.

On Friday August 21, 2015 Thando Thabethe revealed through her Instagram account that she had lost her brother Sibu Thabethe. She also has a sister named Mimi Thabethe.

She attended Mondeor High School in Johannesburg South and matriculated in 2007. During her high school years she started doing some television work on shows such as YOTV’s Quest for Fame, Backchat and Celebrity Fast Facts.

In 2008 Thando Thabethe enrolled at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) to study a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Comm) Accounting. While studying at the University of Johannesburg she started working at UJFM as a news reader.

During that period she landed a role in a documentary on the DSTV channel, Mindset Learn. In 2011 she moved from being a news reader to being a host of UJFM’s drive show and this led her being head hunted by the Johannesburg based YFM.

 

 

My Perfect Family, Generations and Other Work; 2011 – to date

In 2011 Thando Thabethe was cast in a lead role of the SABC 1 original sitcom, My Perfect Family, to portray the character of Thando Nkosi. My Perfect Family also stars Nhlanhla John Lata, Lethabo Gumede and Baby Cele with Neho Moloko and Lillian Dube. In 2013 she began making guest appearances as co-host of e.tv’s Club 808 and guest starred on the second season of the SABC 1 drama series, Intersexions, as Lulu.

In 2013 she guest starred as Evette on the SABC 1 sitcom, Single Guys, which starred Thabo Malema, Thomas Gumede, Motlatsi Mafatshe, Zola Nombona and Nolwazi Shange with Warren Masemola. She also appeared on Vuzu TV’s game show, 10 Over 10, as a commentator. Also in 2013 she starred on an episode of the e.tv anthology series, Mzansi Love: Kasi Style, as Josephine.

In 2014 Thando Thabethe began hosting SABC 1’s reality competition talent show, 1’s and 2’s, with DJ Sphectacula and DJ Naves as judges. That year she also starred on the SABC 1 drama series, Kowethu, as Sazi alongside Atandwa Kani, Vuyo Dabula, Yule Masiteng, Vatiswa Ndara and Amanda du-Pont with Thato Molamu.

In 2015 she joined SABC 1’s long running soap opera, Generations, as Nolwazi; this was after the soap was forced into a hiatus following the dismissal of the entire principal cast which included Menzi Ngubane, Seputla Sebogodi and Nambitha Mpumlwana as well as long serving actress Sophie Ndaba. Upon return from the hiatus, as Generations: The Legacy, the new cast was introduced which included the returning Connie Ferguson and Rapulana Seiphemo as well as newcomer Thulisile Phongolo who plays Namhla Diale; shortly thereafter, Thando Thabethe joined as Nolwazi.

Radio

Thando Thabethe first worked on radio while studying towards her Bachelor of Commerce (B.Comm) Accounting at the University of Johannesburg (UJ). It has been reported that she was with UJFM from 2008 to 2011; she started working there as a news reader and later hosted the drive time show.

In 2011 she was head hunted by the Johannesburg based youth radio station, YFM, where she hosted a show titled Audio Treat which aired weekends from 12pm to 3pm. As of 2014 Thando Thabethe has since joined SABC Radio’s 5FM where she hosts Beats by Demand on Sundays from 10am to 2pm and is also part of The Roger Goode Show weekdays as a traffic reporter.
