Samkelo Ndlovu

Samkelo Ndlovu is a South African actress who currently portrays the character of Lerato on’s soap opera, Rhythm City. She previously played Sonia on SABC 1’s hit drama series, Zone 14 and DJ Lulu on SABC 1’s long running soap opera Generations.

Samkelo Ndlovu was born in Alexandra township of Johannesburg in the Gauteng province of South Africa.

In an interview conducted by Bridget Masinga for Mzansi Magic’s All Access Mzansi it is revealed that Samkelo Ndlovu did not grow up in Alexandra township.

In that interview Bridget Masinga states that Samkelo Ndlovu grew up in the Suburbs.

Samkelo Ndlovu is the last born of her siblings; in any interview with Just Curious TV (JCTV) she states that she has sisters but does not say how many, furthermore, she does not conclusively establish whether or not she has brothers.

This is because she only mentions her sisters to reference the striking resemblance she particularly shares with her mother. She lost her father when she was 12 years old, Samkelo Ndlovu revealed this in that interview.

Samkelo Ndlovu speaks five languages, these being; English, IsiXhosa, IsiZulu,  Sesotho and Setswana.

She went to Fairways Primary School on Corlett Drive in Sandton, Johannesburg in Gauteng. Samkelo Ndlovu later went to Sandringham High School in Johannesburg and in 2007 she matriculated from that school.

She has previously stated that while in school her mother encouraged her to play sports, especially netball but did not do well in it and she later moved to swimming and did well in it which led to her earning half colours.

Samkelo Ndlovu enrolled at AFDA, the South African School of Motion Picture Medium and Live Performance, to study a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Directing and Writing and after two years of studying she dropped, enlisted the services of a talent agent to pursue a professional acting career.



Acting Career, 2009 – to date

Samkelo Ndlovu reportedly got her first acting job just one month after dropping out of AFDA; she got a role on the Kagiso Lediga and Trevor Noah fronted comedy feature film, Taka Takata, where she portrayed the character of Lerato.

In 2010 she joined the cast of SABC 1’s drama series, Zone 14, for the third season of that show and portrayed the character of Sonia. Her portrayal of Sonia brought her to the attention of wider audiences and perhaps served as the vehicle to early success.

Samkelo Ndlovu returned to Zone 14 to reprise her role as Sonia for the fourth and final season which concluded in 2012, two years after she joined the show. Also in 2010 she portrayed the character of Mbali in a Sdumo Mtshali fronted first season of SABC 1’s original drama series, Intersexions.

In 2011 she joined another SABC 1 original drama series, Sokhulu & Partners, where she portrayed the character of Misso. In the same year she had a recurring role on Generations as DJ Lulu and starred in the eleventh season of Soul City alongside Leleti Khumalo, Patrick Mofokeng and Fana Mokoena among others.

Also in 2011 Samkelo Ndlovu starred in a feature film titled Skyf alongside Thabo Malema and Thapelo Mokoena; the latter also served as the producer through his film production company, Easy Sundays Productions. In 2012 she joined the star studded cast of Mzansi Magic’s telenovela, iNkaba, where she portrayed the character of Lira Khumalo.

In 2013 Samkelo Ndlovu starred in an episode titled “Lawless” of’s second season of the anthology series, Mzansi Love: Kasi Style, as Lebo; other episodes of the second season starred the likes of Sipho “Psyfo” Ngwenya, Khanyi Mbau, Amanda du-Pont and Hlubi Mboya among others. In July 2013 she joined the cast of’s soap opera Rhythm City where she stars as Lerato.




Samkelo Ndlovu has spoken out on numerous occasions about her love for music and her plans to make music in the future. She was featured on DJ Kent’s song titled “Vertigo”.




Samkelo Ndlovu has said on different interviews that she does not “method act” nor does she draw inspiration from her own life in order to enhance her performance. She has described “method acting” as dangerous.
