He grew up in KwaMashu and then, along with his family, moved to Pietermaritzburg also in KwaZulu-Natal before moving to Cape Town in the Western Cape province of South Africa.

His parents separated and later divorced when he was a baby; “my mom was more of a friend to me, things were relaxed with her and we could just be silly and laugh. My dad had expectations of us and was more disciplined,” he recalled in an interview with Mamas & Papas.

His father moved to Johannesburg while his mother was an academic who studied fro years in South Africa and in the United Kingdom (UK) to become an advocate. His grandmother was an entrepreneur who owned a tuck shop and a hair salon.

Riky Rick is one of eight children, all boys; he has a total of seven brother, four brothers from his mother’s side and three brothers from his father’s side.

He attended a boarding school; it has been reported that it was there that he started hie journey in music. After matriculating (from Hilton College as reported by the Daily Sun) Riky Rick enrolled at AFDA, The South African School of Motion Picture Medium and Live Performance, where he studied film production.

According to a April 2015 Mail & Guardian article titled “Rapper Riky Rick rides new wave of Kwaito” he “has been working in the music industry since 2006”; that report stated that he started out recording music with his friends and later decided to take up rapping as a career.

Other reports have stated that it was by Bongani Fassie’s side that Riky Rick was first inspired to make music; his first single was titled “Barbershop” featuring DA L.E.S., however, the single did not make an impact on the popular music scene. He followed up with “Nafukwa” which was a great success and surpassed “Barbershop”.
