Riaad Moosa

Riaad Moosa is a South African comedian, TV host, actor and Doctor of Medicine. Moosa’s claim to fame is arguably a 2012 film Material, which is said to have been inspired by his life.

Riaad Moosa was born in India and alter moved to  South Africa with his family.

He is of Indian-Malay descent; his father is Indian while his mother is a Cape Town born Malay.

He is one of three siblings to his parents; he has a sister, who just like him, is also a doctor.

Riaad Moosa and his siblings grew up in the suburb of Grassy Park in the Cape Flats in the Western Cape province of South Africa.

He went to South Peninsula High School in Diep River in the Western Cape and matriculated in 1994.

Riaad Moosa enrolled at the University of Cape Town (UCT) Medical School to pursue his Medicine doctorate.

It was there at the University of Cape Town that he began performing stand-up comedy.

Riaad Moose spent six years at the University of Cape Town where he completed his doctorate and is a qualified medicine practitioner.

When he completed his doctorate he did his and completed his internship and later practiced as a doctor.

Prior to Material, Riaad Moosa was known to most South African as a stand up comedian with popular shows such as Strictly Halaal and Riaad Moosa for the Baracka as well as a stint on the e-News channel’s satirical news programme, the Late Night News with Loyiso Gola where he gave the The Second Opinion with Dr Riaad.


Entertainment Career

Moosa started doing stand-up comedy while studying medicine at the University of Cape Town. He was the winner of the “One City, Many Comics Talent Competition” held as part of the One City Festival in September 1999.

By the year 2000 he had come to prominence on the comedy-club circuit in Cape Town.

In the years that followed, he starred in the Alex Jay 5fm “Comedy Jams” and Real Concert’s “Winston King Size Comedy Show,” headlining the “Sprite Soul Comedy Jams” in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban; supported Russell Peters in his show “Made in India” at the Luxurama theatre; and performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, headlining in the Cape Comedy Collective – “The new South Africa Stands Up” production.

Towards the end of 2006, Moosa had scheduled sold-out one-man shows, Strictly Halaal and Riaad Moosa For The Baracka in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town. The success of both shows prompted extended runs for a further two months.

A year later,  in 2008, Moosa appeared alongside Marc Lottering and Nik Rabinowitz, in the variety comedy show “3 Wise Men,” directed by David Kramer.

In 2009, he featured in the Anant Singh and John Vlismas produced comedy-collective feature film “Outrageous”.

He supported Eddie Izzard for the 46664 “It’s No Joke” concert.


As an Actor

Moosa’s earlier TV work include Laugh Out Loud, Pure Monate Show and later, ther Late Nite News with Loyiso Gola and Comedy Central Presents Riaad Moosa Live at Parker’s as host, as well as Doctor’s Orders

Moosa’s film credit include Crazy Monkey Straight Outta Benoni and the critically acclaimed Material which he also c0o-wrote and co-produced.

In 2013 Riaad Moosa was one of the stars of the film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, an adaptation of Nelson Mandela’s autobiography Long Walk to Freedom, playing the role of former South African politician and political prisoner, Ahmed Kathrada.

The film also starred famed British actors Idris Elba and Naomie Harris as well as South Africans Fana Mokoena, Tony Kgoroge, Jamie Bartlett, Thapelo Mokoena and Terry Pheto.
