Reeva Steenkamp

Reeva Steenkamp was a South African model, paralegal and television personality. She rose to ultimate prominence after she was shot and killed by South African sprint runner Oscar Pistorius and posthumously appeared on the 5th season of Tropika Island of Treasure alongside fellow celebrities such as Pearl Thusi, Phuti Khomo, Jay Anstey, AKA, Da Les and others.

Reeva Steenkamp was born in Cape Town in the Western Cape province of South Africa.

She was born to parents Barry Steenkamp and and his second wife June Steenkamp.

Reeva Steenkamp was the youngest of three siblings, her two siblings are Adam Steenkamp and Simone Steenkamp.

The Steenkamp family later relocated to Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape province, South Africa.

In the Eastern Cape, Reeva Steenkamp attended St Dominic’s Priory School, a pre school, junior, and high private Catholic school founded in 1900 in Godlonton Avenue in the suburb of Miramar, in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, South Africa.

She later matriculated there an proceeded to pursue higher education.

In 2005 Reeva Steenkamp graduated with a Bachelor of Laws degree.

After she finished her law studies, Steenkamp worked as a paralegal and as a model.

She had began modelling at age 14.

In 2011 Steenkamp applied to the Law Society of South Africa.

She hoped to have qualified as legal advocate by the age of 30.




Modelling and Television

In 2004 Reeva Steenkamp was a finalist in the Weekend Post Faces of the Future competition.

In 2005 she was a finalist in the Herald Miss Port Elizabeth contest. Reeva Steenkamp was the first face of Avon cosmetics and modelled for for the jewellery company Sivana Diamonds.

Steenkamp appeared in FHM magazine as a model and cover girl. In 2011 she was ranked #40 in the FHM 100 Sexiest Women in the World poll of South African FHM readers and and #45 in 2012.

In 2012 he was a celebrity face of the Spirit Day anti-bullying campaign.

Reeva Steenkamp had previously worked as the live roaming presenter for FashionTV in South Africa. In 2012 She featured as a celebrity contestant on the BBC Lifestyle show Baking Made Easy.

reeva-steenkamp-tiot-5-1On February 16, 2013 two days after Reeva Steenkamp was shot and killed by Oscar Pistorius, season five of Tropika Island of Treasure premiered on SABC 1. Tropika Island of Treasure 5 was filmed in Jamaica and was hosted by DJ Fresh and Rosina Casserly. The first episode was dedicated to Steenkamp and was preceded by a video tribute to her.

The eventual winner was South African rapper Da Les, when Steenkamp was eliminated she appear in the video diary saying  “I don’t have any regrets and I don’t have any bitterness,” seen sitting under a palm tree with the sea in the background and a white beach house.



Personal Life

In November 2012 Reeva Steenkamp began a relationship with South African Olympic and Paralympic sprint runner Oscar Pistorius, they were first seen publicly as a pair when they arrived at the South African Sports Awards Bash in Sandton together.

She had previously been in a relationship with Blue Bulls and Springbok rugby player Francois Hougaard.




On February 14, 2013 Reeva Steenkamp was shot and killed by South African paralympian Oscar Pistorius at his Silverwoods Country Estate home in Pretoria, Gauteng. Pistorius has never denied shooting Steenkamp, he claimed the he shot her believing she was an intruder.

On February 19, 2013 Reeva Steenkamp was cremated at Victoria Park crematorium in Port Elizabeth.

She was named SA Persons of the year 2013 by Daily Maverick alongside slain Bredasdorp teenager Anene Booysen.

In February 2014, a year after Steenkamp’s death,’s 24hour news channel eNCA aired a half-hour documentary special about Steenkamp’s life titled Reeva: The Model You Thought You Knew.

The trial of Oscar Pistorius was heard at the North Gauteng High Court, Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa. Oscar Pistorius was found not guilty of murder but rather guilty of culpable homicide over the shooting and death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

On December 10, 2014 Judge Thokozile Masipa ruled that the prosecution can appeal the culpable homicide conviction in pursuit of the murder conviction.
