President Jacob Zuma’s supporters are ready to defend him

The African National Congress (ANC) National Executive Committee (NEC) find itself trapped between the rock and the hard place as countless voices want President Jacob Zuma and even more voices want him to finish his term. The situations may seem simple but it is far from that. It could very well spell the end of the ANC rule.

ANC’s national executive committee faces pressure from the ANC stalwarts, who have warned that the party was dying. Alliance partners Cosatu and the SA Communist Party (SACP) who have made it clear that they no longer wish to be associated with President Jacob Zuma.

There are also opposition parties, civil societies, churches, the media and some within the ANC ranks and it’s National Executive Committee – all pulling towards the removal of President Jacob Zuma.

“We have a sense that some of the issues we have been dealing with have not reached the NEC. Given the seriousness of this capture of the state by our own leaders within the ANC, we, as the veterans and stalwarts of the movement, call on the NEC, as it meets this weekend, to show leadership to our members, supporters and the nation, and exercise its executive power in terms of the ANC constitution to remove from government all those who are party to this project of state capture. In particular, the ANC should seriously consider recalling the president as head of state and of government,” ANC veteran Murphy Morobe told The Star in a letter.

However, the supporters of President Jacob Zuma are not standing by silently even as the he does, “Let the motion against the president come. We are ready for it! If they raise it, they must put facts on the table, but I don’t think it will fly,” Umkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans Association chairperson Kebby Maphatsoe said.

“This issue is totally different from (former president) Thabo Mbeki as he was no longer ANC president when he was recalled. If you remove Zuma you are violating the constitution of the ANC. The branches of the ANC still have confidence in Zuma. He must finish his term in December,” Kebby Maphatsoe said.
