Pearl Modiadie

Pearl Modiadie is the South African television personality and actress who came to prominence as the of e.tv’s Craz-e alongside the likes of Zola Hashatsi, Kriya Gangiah and Lee-Roy Wright among others. She has since transitioned to mainstream entertainment with the SABC 1’a hit show Zaziwa, her highly acclaimed portrayal of Kefiloe Malope on e.tv’s Scandal and her recurring role on SABC 1’s hit soapie, Generations.

Pearl Modiadie was born in Xubeni section of Tembisa township in Johannesburg in the Gauteng province of South Africa.

She has has two sisters; one younger than her and the other older.

Pearl Modiadie went to Norkem Park High School in Kempton Park in Johannesburg, Gauteng and matriculated in 2005.

In 2007 she enrolled at Rosebank College to study a diploma in Media Studies and Journalism.

In 2009 Pearl Modiadie completed her diploma at Rosebank College.

Prior to her fame, Pearl Modiadie won a Miss Tembisa beauty pageant.

In 2006 she made her television debut when she hired as one of the presenters of e.tv’s kids programme Craz-e which features multiple sub-programmes, among them-as of 2014; Sistahood, Frenzy, Shiz Niz, Craz-e World Live and various cartoon shows.

In May 2007 Pearl Modiadie began hosting e.tv’s Crazed Out.

She was on e.tv’s Craz-e from 2006 to 2012, during this period she was the host of Sistahood and Craz-e World Live.

In 2009 Pearl Modiadie became the content producer on one of the shows she hosted, Sistahood. She was producing for Red Pepper Pictures, a company that produced all Craz-e sub-programmes.

She remained content producer on Sistahood until 2013; for her work on that show, Pearl Modiadie was nominated for the South African Film and Television Award (SAFTA) on two categories in 2013 – Best Talk Show and Best Youth & Children Programme.

 

Radio

In 2009 Pearl Modiadie joined Johannesburg based provincial radio station, YFM.

She hosted The Jumpstart which broadcast on Saturdays and Sundays between 06:00am and 09:00am.

Pearl Modiadie also hosted YFM’s The Weekend Wrap Up which aired on Sundays from 21:00 to 00:00.

In 2013 she left YFM.

 

Television and Acting

In 2006 Pearl Modiadie joined e.tv’s Craz-e and spent six years there, during this period she presented Crazed Out, Craz-e World Live and Sistahood.

In 2009 she became content producer for Sistahood, she held this position for 4 years up to 2013. She her services as content producer on Sistahood, Pearl Modiadie received two SAFTA nominations; Best Talk Show and Best Youth & Children Programme.

She made a guest appearance on e.tv’s Rhythm City.

In 2013 Pearl Modiadie portrayed Kefiloe Malope on e.tv’s sopie, Scandal. In that year, after having spent her entire youth career on e.tv – culminating with two SAFTA nominations and the portrayal of Kefiloe Malope on Scandal – she moved over to the public broadcaster, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).

In May 2013 Pearl Modiadie began presenting an SABC 1 original music talk show, Zaziwa. On Zaziwa she has interviewed guests such as; Luthando Shosha, Bonang Matheba, Lerato Kganyago, Zizo Beda, Azania Mosaka, Zenande Mfenyana, Amanda du Pont, Melusi Yeni, Zola, AKA, Black Coffee, Atandwa Kani, Thembi Seete, DJ Sbu, Sinazo Yolwa, Andile Ncube and Kenny Lattimore among others. In 2014 Zaziwa was renewed by the SABC for the second season with Pearl Modiadie returning as the host.

She had a recurring role on SABC 1’s besieged long running hit soapie Generations as Pan African radio DJ Jade, this was before the show went off air due to the dismissal of the soapie’s entire principal cast. When Generations returned on air Pearl Modiadie had been kept.

Pearl Modiadie was also a regular field presenter on SABC 3’s news and lifestyle breakfast show, Expresso. On Monday April 28, 2014 she was one of the celebrities who presented winners with their awards at the 20th Annual South African Music Awards (SAMAs).

In mid 2014 during the 2014 Fifa World Cup held in Brazil, she hosted a SABC 1 world cup special, Kasi to Favelas, alongside Maps Maponyane. In late 2014 Pearl Modiadie was the subject of the fourth season of Nicky Greenwall‘s The Close Up. On February 28, 2015 she was the host of the Social Media Lounge at the 14th Annual Metro FM Music Awards and conducted post award interviews.

 

Other Work

Pearl Modiadie has been a producer at Nextdoor Media since 2013. She is also a producer of Zaziwa, the show she hosts on SABC 1. Pearl Modiadie was a columnist for Soul magazine where she wrote a column titled The Last Word.
