oscar pistorius -sentencingOscar Pistorius was convicted of culpable homicide in the shooting and death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Thursday morning of February 14, 2013 at his Silverwoods Country Estates home in Pretoria, South Africa.

On that fateful morning, Oscar Pistorius fired four shots through a closed – and presumably locked bathroom door as he later had to break it down with a cricket bat – hitting Reeva Steenkamp on the hip, arm and head.

Oscar Pistorius, from the onset, claimed that he had fired at the closed bathroom door because he believed that there was an intruder behind it; furthermore, believed that he had left Reeva Steenkamp sleeping on the bed he woke up from to go shoot at the intruder.

Gerrie Nel, the state prosecutor, told the North Gauteng High court that the minimum sentence that society would be happy with is 10 years’ imprisonment – further slamming Oscar Pistorius‘ failure to communicate with Reeva Steenkamp before opening fire.

During the pre-sentencing proceedings it also emerged that Oscar Pistorius has been paying a sum of R6000 per month to the parents of slain model Reeva Steenkamp since March 2013.

He had also offered a sum of R375 000 but was rejected as “blood money” by June Steenkamp, Reeva Steenkamp’s mother – Gerri Nel told the court the the R6000 per month paid by Pistorius to the Steenkamp family will be paid back.

Nel went on to say Oscar Pistorius was using his disability to stay out of prison.

Barry Roux, arguing for Pistorius, said he has been wrongly labelled by the media as a cold blooded murderer.

He also told the court that Oscar Pistorius‘ payments to the Steenkamp family showed that he wanted to do more to make up for his crime.

Saying that Pistorius had lost everything as a result of the shooting and killing of Reeva Steenkamp.

The trial of Oscar Pistorius is expected to be concluded on Tuesday October 21, 2014 when he is sentenced.
