The Orlando Pirates vs Kaizer Chiefs took place on January 30, 2016 at 15:30 at FNB Stadium in Nasrec, Soweto, Johannesburg in Gauteng province, South Africa and marked the 158th official meeting between these Soweto rivals.

Going into the 158th Soweto Derby both teams faced difficulty in the face of a string of poor results. Orlando Pirates‘ highlight of the season was reaching the 2015 CAF Confederation Cup final but succumbed to Étoile du Sahel.

Even as they did well in the continental competition they found it difficult to employ the same conviction domestically. Kaizer Chiefs were flying high just a season earlier; the departure of Stuart Baxter coupled with player contract drama saw them slump dramatically.

However, it is important to note that they have reached to domestic cup finals (2015 MTN 8 and 2015 Telkom Knockout) but lost both to Ajax Cape Town and Mamelodi Sundowns respectively.

Orlando Pirates went in to the match on the back of two defeats, two draws and a single victory. On Sunday of December 20, 2015 they faced Mamelodi Sundowns in a match played Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria at 15:30.

Unlike the seasons gone by where Orlando Pirates dominance over the Tshwane side induced tears from Pitso Mosimane; the visitors where pommeled 2-0.

Orlando Pirates next faced Platinum Stars at Orlando Stadium in Soweto on Saturday of January 9, 2016 at 15:30 in the afternoon and played to a 1-1 draw. Their next match was also at Orlando Stadium, this time against Pretoria University on Wednesday of January 13, 2016 at 19:30  at night and recorded a 2-0 victory.

They next traveled to the city of Pietermaritzburg in the KwaZulu-Natal province where they faced Maritzburg United at Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday of January 16, 2016 at 20:15 at night and played to a 3-3 draw. Orlando Pirates next traveled to the North West province to face Jomo Cosmos at Olën Park where they lost 1-0 in a match played on Saturday of January 23, 2016 at 18:00 at night.

Kaizer Chiefs faced Mamelodi Sundowns in the 2015 Telkom Knockout final on Wednesday December 16, 2015 at Moses Mabhida Stadium in the city of Durban in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa in a match played at 18:00 at night. In that match Kaizer Chiefs was trounced 3-1 and losing the second consecutive final in the process.

On Tuesday of December 19, 2015 Kaizer Chiefs faced and defeated BidVest Wits in a match played at 19:30 at night at Cape Town Stadium in the Western Cape. They next face Mamelodi Sundowns, this time in the Absa Premiership, on Saturday of January 09, 2016 at FNB Stadium at 20:15 at night and played to a goalless draw.

On Sunday of January 17, 2016 Kaizer Chiefs defeated Bloemfontein Celtic in a match played at 15:30 in the afternoon at Free State Stadium. They once again returned to Cape Town Stadium as the home side where they suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Platinum Stars in a match played at 15:30 in the afternoon on Sunday of January 24, 2016.

Recent Meetings

In the last five meeting Kaizer Chiefs have won two. The other two were played to a draw with Kaizer Chiefs winning one of those two draws 6-5 on penalties and Orlando Pirates won one. Kaizer Chiefs dominance over Orlando Pirates is not only reflected in recent meetings but has been so from the early years of the Soweto Derby.

In the last five meetings prior to the 158th Soweto Derby Kaizer Chiefs defeated Orlando Pirates 1-0 in the 2014 MTN 8 final at Moses Mabhida Stadium. On December 6, 2014 Kaizer Chiefs once again defeated Orlando Pirates, this time by 2-0 at FNB Stadium. On March 7, 2015 the two sides played to a goalless draw at FNB Stadium.

On October 31, 2015 the two sides met at FNB Stadium in a Absa Premiership encounter and Orlando Pirates registered a rare victory over Kaizer Chiefs when they walked 3-1 winners. On November 7, 2015 Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates met again at FNB Stadium, this time in the 2015 Telkom Knockout semi-final, where a winner could not be decided in regulation time and after extra-time; Kaizer Chiefs later emerged victorious 6-5 on penalties.

The Match

Orlando Pirates showed intent from early on applying pressure going forward which resulted in a couple of corner-kicks which presented half opportunities. Kaizer Chiefs central defender was well positioned to clear on of those corner-kicks 5 minutes into the match.

This was followed by a quick Kaizer Chiefs counter attack which saw George Maluleka attempt a shot at goal from range but it was pushed over the cross bar by Orlando Pirates goal keeper, Brighton Mhlongo. In the 12th minute George Maluleka once again fired at Orlando Pirates goal but this time it was an east save for Brighton Mhlongo.

In the nineteenth minute Reneilwe Letsholonyane scored but his goal did not count as the referee ruled that he was off-side. In the 27th minute Willard Katsande broke the deadlock and put Kaizer Chiefs in front. Orlando Pirates nearly equalized in the 30th minute when Rooi Mahamutsa’s long ball was met by Thamsanqa Gabuza who forced a save out of Itumeleng Khune.

Orlando Pirates continued to push for an equalizer to no avail as Thabo Matlaba’s cross was deflected for a corner kick in the 39th minute. William Twala forced a save out of Brighton Mhlongo in the 40th minute. This marked the last chance of the match as the first half concluded with the visitors, Kaizer Chiefs, leading 1-0 thanks to Willard Katsande’s 27th minute goal.

In the second half Orlando Pirates returned ready to equalize; in the 50th minute troubled striker Lehlohonolo Majoro fired a powerful shot from outside the box but Itumeleng Khune equal to the task. In the 56th minute Thandani Ntshumayelo unleashed a powerful shot which was tipped over the crossbar by Itumeleng Khune.

In the 68th minute Orlando Pirates efforts paid off after a long throw from Ayanda Gcaba found Thamsanqa Gabuza who made no mistake heading the ball int the net. In the 77th minute Rooi Mahamutsa pulled another long throw but this time headed unsuccessfully by Ayanda Gcaba. In the end the match ended 1-1
