Omuhle Gela is a South African actress who previously portrayed the character of Busi Motsamai on SABC 2’s flagship soap opera, Muvhango before being replaced by Bontle Sithole and in 2015 she had a recurring role on e.tv’s original drama series, Umlilo, as Andile Simelane.

Omuhle Gela was born Omuhle Makaziwe Gela in a suburb located east of Johannesburg, this is according to numerous publications; however, in an interview conducted by Khanyi Mbau on Katch It with Khanyi she stated that she was born in the East Rand.

She was quoted in an interview with Bona magazine as saying, “I’m a young lady born and raised in the East of Johannesburg.”

In the Katch It with Khanyi interview Omuhle Gela told Khanyi Mbau that she has one sibling, an older sister.

In 20100Omuhle Gela went to AFDA [the South African School of Motion Picture Medium and Live Performance] in Johannesburg in the Gauteng province of South Africa where she studied acting.

In 2011 she attended City Varsity Film and Media School also in Johannesburg where she studied production over a period of 2 years finishing her studies in 2012.

It is understood that Omuhle Gela once guest starred on SABC 1’s long running soap opera Generations; furthermore she had brief stints on Soweto TV and TransAfrica Radio.

In 2012 she had a guest starring role on SABC 1’s youth drama series, Tshisa, in it’s delayed third season which also served to introduce Thulisile Phongolo to the South African audiences.

In 2013 Omuhle Gela portrayed the character of Beauty on Mzansi Magic’s sitcom, Taxi Ride, which is the continuation of the 2012 feature film of the same name. That same year she was cast on SABC 2’s flagship soap opera, Muvhango, to portray the character of Busi Motsamai.

Also in 2013 Omuhle Gela was cast on Mzansi Magic’s Seputla Sebogodi and Baby Cele fronted soap opera, Zabalaza, to portray the character of MyGirl; her role was initially recurring but after the show was renewed for the second season, it was converted into a starring role.

In 2015 she was cast as Andile Simelane on e.tv’s original drama series, Umlilo, which starred Hamilton Dlamini, Nokuthula Ledwaba, Gcina Mkhize and Nomzamo Mbatha as well as Thato Molamu. She was a guest on e.tv’s game show, I Love South Africa and on Khanyi Mbau‘s talk sow, Katch It with Khanyi which also airs on e.tv.

 

  • Departure from Muvhango

In October 2014 Omuhle Gela revealed on Twitter that she was leaving Muvhango, “I have officially left Muvhango. Very emotional/brave move. Excited for the new chapter God has for me,” she wrote. In a Daily Sun article she was quoted saying, “My agent and I couldn’t agree on a lot of things with the soapie so we decided it was best that I left the show and went on to focus on other things.”

The character of Busi Motsamai was not discontinued but was taken over by newcomer Bontle Sithole to which Omuhle Gela remarked, “best wishes to the young lady who is about to take over and thanks to the channel for giving me the opportunity.”

Other Work

Omuhle Gela is the founder, owner and designer of a swimwear line called Twenty Swimwear. Speaking to Bona magazine she remarked, “Twenty Swimsear was created to boost women’s self-confidence. The whole idea is for women of all body types to be able to wear fitting swimwear and feel confident, comfortable and sexy in it.”

 

 

Personal Life

Omuhle Gela dated famed South African musician and Metro FM DJ, Lulo Café. This later became a subject on an enduring suspicion that she had used him to get a head start on television to which she responded in an interview with Khanyi Mbau on e.tv’s Katch It with Khanyi, “I got into the industry because of him. We had been dating for the longest time and we were together before I was on TV.”

It is understood that Omuhle Gela is in a relationship with a business; however, very little if anything at all is known about this businessman. Despite her lack of willingness to divulge information about her personal life, the media has not stopped probing stories relating to the gift she received on Valentines Day of  2015 which was a reported apartment as well as her reported use expensive car reportedly belonging to the same man.

In the same interview with Khanyi Mbau, Omuhle Gela said of the public’s reaction to her personal life, “I used to care about other people’s opinions. Now I don’t care. I was so overwhelmed when I got that apartment. He knew that I wanted to move out but there was no way I expected that he would actually buy it for me.”
