Nomuzi Mabena

Nomuzi Mabena is a South African television personality and hip hop artist best known for winning the 2012 MTV Base VJ Search ahead of Naledi Radebe and now famed IsiBaya actress Nomzamo Mbatha. Prior to the 2012 MTV Base VJ Search she was the losing finalist in the SABC 1 Live Presenter Search which was won by Luthando Shosha and top six finalist on the SABC 1’s Media Career Guide Presenter Search.

Nomuzi Mabena was born in the town of Benoni in the East Rand in Johannesburg in the Gauteng province of South Africa.

She has an older sister, this is according to an interview she did with Zalebs titled ‘Nomuzi: Hail the queen of the Skhanda movement’ where she was quoted saying “My sister has always been my day one fan, from driving me to modelling class to where I am now. I love her to bits, she’s incredible.”

Nomuzi Mabena was raised in Benoni in the East Rand presumably by both her parents as she has previously been quoted saying, “My parents have always been very supportive. I know they don’t often understand everything but they always make an effort to find out what’s going on and show support. Every time I go home and turn on the TV it’s on MTV Base which I think is cute.”

She attended St Dunstans College situated in the suburb of Rynfield in the town Benoni in the East Rand, Johannesburg in the Gauteng province.

Nomuzi Mabena attended that school from the age of three up to grade 12.

Upon matriculating from St Dunstans College she enrolled at Varsity College in Sandton City, Johannesburg where she studied Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies.

While in at St Dunstans she entered and won Mr and Miss St Dunstans, “I think the reason why I won that competition was because I was just the loudest and craziest person at that school and it got people to vote for me,” as quoted in an interview with Get It.

As part of her prize for winning the pageant she received two months worth of modelling classes with a Benoni based Rampage Modeling Agency, “It turned out that I really enjoyed modeling so I stuck with it,” she told Get It magazine in the same interview.

According to an article published on Get It magazine website Nomuzi Mabena entered and contested Miss Benoni on three separate occasions.

In the 2010 edition of the same pageant she was crowned Miss Benoni.

At the beginning on 2012 Nomuzi Mabena entered the presenter search for the SABC 1 educational programme, the Media Career Guide, which at the time was hosted by the then relatively new Boitumelo Thulo and made it all the way to the top six but was unsuccessful.

Around the same period she also enter the presenter search for another SABC 1 programme, Live [today’s Live Amp] which at the time was hosted by Bonang Matheba, and lost to eventual winner Luthando Shosha who herself had previously lost to Minnie Dlamini.


2012 MTV Base VJ Search

In 2012 Nomuzi Mabena entered the MTV Base VJ Search, a talent search competition show organized and run by Viacom International Media Networks Africa music channel MTV Base.

2012 MTV Base VJ Search FinalistsThe MTV Base VJ Search was first organized in South Africa in 2005 as MTV base World Chart Express where Sizwe Dhlomo emerged victorious and left a promising career as a Computer Programmer to forge a successful one on television.

In 2012 the MTV Base VJ Search auditions were held in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg; conducted by Azania Mosaka, Bonang Matheba, HHP and Tim Horwood.

Nomuzi Mabena auditioned at Viacom International Media Networks Africa in Hyde Park, Johannesburg.

In the grand finale held on Saturday night of October 20, 2012 at Taboo Night Club in Sandton, Johannesburg Nomuzi Mabena overcame fellow finalists Nomzamo Mbatha who has gone on to forge her own successful career as an actress and Naledi Radebe to become an MTV Base VJ.



Prominence, 2012 – to date

In 2012 Nomuzi Mabena became an MTV VJ after defeating a multitude of hopefuls in open auditions that culminated in a finale that was decided by a public vote.

As part her prize for winning the MTV Base VJ Search she appeared on’s Club 808 as co-host alongside then hosts Mo Flava and Dineo Ranaka.

In 2013 she joined Bonang Matheba, Joey Rasdien and Sizwe Dhlomo in search the on the new MTV Base VJ; the search resulted in Sandile Eugene Ntshingila being crowned 2013 MTV Base VJ Search winner.

In 2014 Nomuzi Mabena attended the MTV Europe Music Awards and the pre-party in Glasgow Scotland where she interviewed international stars on the red carpet.

Nomuzi Mabena is also a hip hop artist signed to Cashtime Life, an entertainment company founded by K.O of Teargas fame along with Teargas band mate, Ma-E, and music and marketing executive Thabiso Khati.

Seven Moozlie and Kid XIn a November 2014 interview with Zalebs titled ‘Nomuzi: Hail the queen of the skhanda movement’ she was quoted saying “I’m obviously also going to be on the road with KO and the whole of Cashtime promoting Skhanda Republic”  – referring to K.O‘s debut solo album.

In March 2015 Nomuzi Mabena released a single in which she collaborated with Kid X, who is also a Cashtime Life artist, titled “Se7en”.

The song was described by Kid X as “he soundtrack to da BEST TIME OF UR LIFE [sic]!” and a “2015 Weekend Special”.

“Every word that made it onto da song was da best possible word [sic],” Kid X was quoted by Channel 4 talking about Se7en.



Personal Life

Nomuzi Mabena was in a relationship with South African actor Thomas Gumede.

The relationship was a subject of a somewhat negative reporting after Nomuzi Mabena was pictured with Samkelo Ndlovu, reportedly a former girlfriend of Thomas Gumede.

In June 2015 Nomuzi Mabena while being interviewed on’s Katch it with Khanyi told Khanyi Mbau, the host of the show, that she was in a relationship with Thomas Gumede but they have since broke up.
