She was raised in the city of Durban by both her parents along with her siblings. Her parents are both academics; her father is a doctor and her mother is a lawyer.

Nandi Mngoma has an older brother who she previously stated that he works in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and a little sister, Langa Mngoma, who is a doctor.

She went to Danville Park Girls’ High in Durban where she later matriculated. She then attended the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) where she studied towards a law degree and later attended Varsity College, “I started in UKZN then ended at Varsity College because I added more electives,” she said in an interview with Just Curious.

Nandi Mngoma’s earliest reported entertainment industry inroads was when she won a talent search competition which allowed her to perform on regular basis at Durban North’s Gateway Theatre of Shopping.

In 2004 she got her very first television job when she was hired by SABC 2 to present a kiddies entertainment programme called Bling. The show, Bling, which aired on SABC 2 was about entertainment, movies and music.

In the years that followed Nandi Mngoma made efforts to break into the South African industry. Most notably in 2010 she entered the SABC 1’s Live presenter search.

The winner of that talent search would have joined Bonang Matheba, Tbo Touch, MTV VJ Sizwe Dhlomo and the lesser known Phila Mazibuko; Nandi Mngoma made it all the way to the top four but lost to eventual winner, Minnie Dlamini, who herself has gone on to become massive figure in the South African entertainment scene. Also in 2010 she entered the O-Access presenter search but came second to eventual winner, Dineo Moeketsi.
