Mpumelelo Bhulose

Mpumelelo Bhulose is a South African actor who previously acted on SABC 1’s long running soap opera, Generations, and fell into obscurity before reviving his acting career on SABC 1’s hit telenovela, Uzalo, where he portrays the character of Muzi “Gxabhashe” Xulu who is a car theft syndicate boss.

Mpumelelo Bhulose was born in KwaMashu township in Durban North in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa.

In the past he has also been credited as Franchot Mpumelelo Matthews.

It is unclear if his name of birth is “Franchot┬áMpumelelo Bhulose”.

He has said on numerous occasions that he grew up in the township of KwaMashu in KwaZulu-Natal. Mpumelelo Bhulose was lesser known to many prior to Uzalo.

In an interview on SABC 1’s The Real Goboza, talking to Sinazo Yolwa, he revealed that he had previously acted on Generations.

He stated that he made his early inroads into acting through the help of famed South African actor Eric Miyeni.

It is understood that Mpumelelo Bhulose portrayed the character of Martin on Generations.

Although Generations is arguably the biggest television show of any genre in South Africa and Mpumelelo Bhulose being one of the most charismatic actors on television today, his time on the show is less than memorable.

He has also portrayed the character of Sipho Sithole on SABC 1’s youth drama series, Tshisa as well as appeared on Khululeka, an SABC sitcom of the 1990’s which starred Joe Mafela and Sindi Dlathu.



Acting Career Revival and Uzalo, 2014 – to date

In 2014 in the wake of problems at Generations various news outlets revealed an impending SABC 1 show being produced by the legendary creator of SABC 2’s Muvhango, Duma Ka Ndlovu and President Jacob Zuma‘s daughter, Gugu Zuma-Ncube.

Uzalo - Gxabhashe and the LadiesThat show was Uzalo, a Zulu language telenovela, which has since gone on air as of February 09, 2015 on SABC 1.

In an interview with Bona magazine Mpumelelo Bhulose revealed that he met Duma Ka Ndlovu at an event in Pretoria in the Gauteng province and it was then that he first heard about Uzalo.

Duma Ka Ndlovu told him that he had been trying to track him down for the role on the show.

On Uzalo Mpumelelo Bhulose portrays the character of Muzi Xulu also known by his clan name, Gxabhashe, a notorious KwaMashu car theft syndicate boss.

Muzi Xulu is also a family man; he has a wife named Lindiwe Xulu (portrayed by Dawn Thandeka King), a daughter named Nosipho Xulu (portrayed by Nompilo Maphumulo) and a son named Mxolisi Xulu (portrayed by Naymaps Maphalala) as well as an out of control little brother who spent 15 years in prison, Mkhonto Xulu (portrayed by Bonga Dlamini).

He (Muzi Xulu) is a notorious figure who famously buried his wife and his son alive after they failed to let him know they have been conned out of R800 0000. Uzalo also stars veteran actors Bheki Mkhwane and Leleti Khumalo as well as young, up-and-coming actors such as Kay Sibiya, Sihle Ndaba and Thandeka Zulu. Mpumelelo Bhulose’s portrayal of Muzi “Gxabhashe” Xulu has been a subject critical acclaim and has propelled him to new heights as an actor.

Mpumelelo Bhulose is the founder of MPF Communications, an agency formed in 2003 based in Vorna Valley in Midrand in the Gauteng province.

Speaking to Bona magazine he said he decided to focus on his production company after leaving Generations; during this period he worked with Ekurhuleni Municipality and the Gauteng Department of Arts and Culture.
