Mondli Cele of Pietermaritzburg United has Died

Mondli Cele of Pietermaritzburg United died in a car accident in the morning of January 17, 2016 after the car he was travelling in veered off into the Duzi river on Park Drive in the city Pietermaritzburg in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. Google+

Mondli CeleMondli Cele was part of the Maritzburg United starting line-up against Orlando Pirates in a 2015/16 Absa Premiership match played at Harry Gwala Stadium at 20:15 on January 16, 2016 in the city of Pietermaritzburg.

In the explosive match against the boys in black Mondli Cele scored the opening in the ninth minute and his side went on to lead the menacing Orlando outfit to three goals to nil in the 36th minute before it all fell apart as Orlando Pirates staged a steady comeback and the match would eventually end 3-3.

Mondli Cele was reportedly travelling with three ladies, one which was an SABC employee who also passed away, while the other two were transported to hospital. According to Brian Zuma, the spokesperson for Maritzburg United, at the time of the accident Mondli Cele was bound for the hotel where the ladies he was travelling with were staying.

The chairman of Maritzburg United, Farouk Kadodia, was quoted by Soccer Laduma saying, “I can confirm that as the club, we are devastated with the passing of Mondli Cele. He passed away in a car accident this morning at about 05h30. I can’t say much at this moment, the club will be releasing a statement at a later stage.”

Mondli Cele made eight appearances for the tea of choice in the 2015/16 Premier Soccer League season. It has been reported that Mondli Cele was 27 years old at the time of his death while other reports have stated that he was born in 1989. The Premier Soccer League of South Africa, Maritzburg United, Orlando Pirates, South African Sports and Recreation Ministry, Fikile Mbalula, South African Media houses, the public and many others paid tribute to the fallen star while sending messages of condolences to his family and the club.
