Mafikizolo continued their comeback trail at the MAMAs 2014

Mafikizolo continue their comeback trail at the MAMAs 2014 when they took two awards tied with Nigerian artist Davido, fellow South African group Uhuru, as well as Nigerian video director Clarence Peters.


The 4th Edition of the MTV Africa Music Awards took place at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Convention Centre in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

Mafikizolo, who have been on the comeback trail since the 13th METRO FM Music Awards ealier this year continued their dominance in the South African music industry by extending their winning streak to Africa.

They were nominated in four categories, Song of the Year, Best Group, Artist of the Year and Best Collaboration and came out on top two times, taking home the coveted Song of the Year and Best Group.

Nigerian artist Davido was another big winner, also in line for Song of the Year, he did not succeed there but still took home the equally impressive Artist of the Year as well as Best Male.

Among the night’s highlights, South African Afro-Soul singer Simphiwe Dana paid tribute to the later former South African President Nelson Mandela with her performance while Lady Smith Black Mambazo were a subject of praise when they performed their unexpected mash up “Acappello” and “Y-tjukutja”.

American rapper Pharrell Williams took home Best International Act ahead of equally prominent nominees Beyoncé, Drake, Miley Cyrus and Rihanna.

Academy Award  winning Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong’o won Personality of the Year, the actress who garnered widespread fame and praise for her performance in 12 Years a Slave was not present in Durban to receive her award.
