Lunga Shabalala

Lunga Shabalala is a South African model, television personality and actor who won the 2011 Selimathunzi presenter search. He currently co-hosts the same show with 2006 Miss South Africa Teen winner, Zizo Beda.

Lunga Shabalala was born in Pietermaritzburg in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa.

He is the son of Thami Shabalala (father), the principal at MehlokaZulu High School in Pietermaritzburg and Nomsa Shabalala (mother), a former teacher who now works for the Department of Education.

Lunga Shabalala is the eldest of three children; he has a younger sister named Lungelwa Shabalala and a little sister named Lungisa Shabalala, this is according to an article published by the Drum magazine website titled “Beefcake in out backyard!”.

He studied a National Diploma (N.Dip) in Town and Regional Planning at Durban University of Technology (DUT).

While studying at Durban University of Technology Lunga Shabalala decided to try out modelling, “in February 2008 I thought, why not? What have I got to lose? I went to a modelling agency on an open day and stood there smiling and was just myself,”  as quoted by the Drum magazine website.

He began doing promotional  and ramp work shortly after; he initially kept his modeling escapades from his parent who have always insisted in education.

“They’ve always been supportive of me but I knew they wouldn’t be thrilled about my modelling, I eventually told them after about eight months and they were fine, as long as I kept on with my studies,” Lunga Shabalala was quoted.

In August 2010 still studying Town and Regional Planning at Durban University of Technology Lunga Shabalala beat nine (9) other hopefuls in the Represent South Africa in Calvin Klein Underwear competition to become the underwear model for the brand.

The prize included a trip to New York City in the United States of America (USA) and at the time he was still based in the KwaZulu-Natal province, “I’m planning on moving to Joburg [Johannesburg] next year to focus on my modelling career. I’m also going to start shooting the CK [Calvin Klein] campaign next year – I can’t wait!,” the Drum magazine website quoted Lunga Shabalala.



Selimathunzi and Continued Success, 2011 – to date

In May 2011 Lunga Shabalala won the nationwide Selimathunzi presenter search through a public vote to join 2006 Miss South Africa Teen, Zizo Beda, as the replacement of Kaos Matu (the show’s longest serving presenter at the time).

“I’m excited at the opportunity to present this popular show and I’d like to believe that I’m different from the previous presenters in that I have my own unique way of communicating to people and I’m also a good listener. I thank the viewers for all the support I received during the voting process. I”m blessed and humbled to have had them in my corner,” Lunga Shabalala was quoted.

In 2013 Lunga Shabalala was a commentator on the second season of Vuzu TV’s countdown game show, 10 Over 10, which also saw the likes of Boitumelo Thulo, Lerato Kganyago, Poppy Ntshongwana and Roxy Burger – among others – commentating.

On December 31, 2013 he hosted the tenth (10th) season of SABC 1’s New Year’s Eve Special, Come Duze 2014, alongside Amanda du Pont. In February 2014 Lunga Shabalala starred as Zuko on the SABC 1 drama series, Task Force, which also starred Rapulana Seiphemo, Tsholofelo Maseko, Tumie Ngumla and Florence Masebe.

Also in 2014 he was a guest on’s Nicky Greenwall hosted talk show, Screentime with Nicky Greenwall. In August 2014 he starred on the SABC 3 reality show, The Man Cave, alongside South African model Janez Vermeiren of Top Billing fame. On December 31, 2014 he hosted the eleventh (11th) season of SABC 1’s New Year’s Eve Special, Come Duze 2015, with Pearl Modiadie.

In February 2015 Lunga Shabalala took part in the first season of Celebrity MasterChef South Africa which aired on M-Net and featured celebrities such as Lorna Maseko-Lukhele of Top Billing, Sade Giliberti, Terence Bridgett and Tol A$$ Mo among others.

Lunga Shabalala is a model; he was a model for the South African division of the underwear division of the American fashion house, Calvin Klein Underwear . He also also appeared on the ramp on numerous occasions including working African Fashion International (AFI) Joburg Fashion Week for the likes of Ephymol and David Tlale.

Lunga Shabalala image and appearance has been a subject of scrutiny and praise since he first burst into the scene as the winner of the 2011 Selimathunzi Presenter Search competition.

His image and appearance has earned him numerous accolades including; Cosmopolitan Magazine 2011 Hunks Calendar and Sexiest Man Finalist – Mr August (December 2010 issue), Finalist in the Sowetan newspaper top 25 hottest men in South Africa , Finalist in the Pravda Vodka and Mambaonline Sexiest Male, Seventeen Magazine’s Sexiest Guy in South Africa 2011, GQ’s Best Dressed Men finalist  2012, Sexiest Male Award at the 2012 Feather Awards and Voted #5 at 2013 GQ Best Dressed Men in South Africa.


Personal Life

Lunga Shabalala was in a relationship with South African model and television personality K. Naomi Noinyane (Keitumetse Naomi Noinyane). His sexuality and relationship with women has previously come under scrutiny; this includes accusations that he is gay and that he has slept with a lot of women.

Naomi NoinyaneLunga Shabalala addressed these accusations during an interview conducted by Nicky Greenwall on her show, Screentime with Nicky Greenwall. “There’s a rumour that I am gay and I slept my way to the top,” Lunga Shabalala told Nicky Greenwall during an interview on Screentime with Nicky Greenwall. “All you can do is just kinda laugh at it because if they writing you still relevant, they writing nonsense, but they’re write it because people still want to read about you,” he said in that interview. “I have laughed at these situations where one person says I am gay and the other says I sleep with five girls a week. In my head I’m thinking, guys can we pick one because I can’t be both, it just don’t make sense,” Lunga Shabalala told Nicky Greenwall.
