Loyiso Gola

Loyiso Gola is a South African stand-up comedian, actor and television personality. He is best known as the co-creator and anchor of e.tv’s and eNews Channel Africa’s (eNCA) satirical news television series, Late Nite News with Loyiso Gola (LNN).

Loyiso Gola was born in Gugulethu township of Cape Town in the Western Cape province of South Africa.

He is Xhosa.

He was raised in Gugulethu by his mother who worked at the bank in the city of Cape Town and his father who was employed by the South African Council of Churches.

His younger brother, Lazola Gola, is also a comedian. It is not clear if he has any other siblings either than Lazola Gola.

Loyiso Gola went to Surrey Estate Primary School in Heideveld, Cape Town in the Western Cape.

He later attended Zonnebloem Nest Senior School in Woodstock, Cape Town in the Western Cape.

Loyiso Gola completed his matric in 2002.

He was introduced to the Cape Comedy Collective at the age of 17 by his high school teacher after he performing a stand-up opening act for famed South African comedian Marc Lottering.

After that Loyiso Gola shadowed stand-up comedians from the comedy troupe for a school work experience programme and began performing on stage regularly with the group.

In December 2002 Loyiso Gola won the Sprite Soul Comedy Tour, after that he left Cape Town for Johannesburg.

His television career began in that same years with appearance on Phat Joe‘s (Majota Khambule) The Phat Joe Show which aired on SABC 1.

In 2003 Loyiso Gola had appearances on another SABC 1 show, the Pure Monate Show, a sketch comedy show created by comedians Kagiso Lediga and David Kau.

In 2005 he was invited to perform stand-up comedy at the Cape Town International Comedy Festival, a prestigious comedy event in South Africa.

Loyiso Gola, Life and TimesIn 2006 Loyiso Gola was once again invited to the Cape Town International Comedy Festival. That same year he was also invited to perform in New York in the United States of America (USA) and traveled to perform in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). He also guest starred on the episode of the SAB 1 drama Mthunzini.com as Themba Nene, a comedian who dies on stage.

In 2007 he became co-host of the SABC 2 talk show, Dinner with the President, created by fellow comedian Pieter-Dirk Uys.

Down the years Loyiso Gola has appeared on numerous comedy show across South Africa and abroad, among other; Kingsize Comedy Jam, Comedy Blackout, Pure Monate Comedy Jam, Blacks Only Comedy Show, Sprite Soul Comedy Jam, I’m Frank, Loyiso Gola for President, Coming Home, Life & Times, Professional Black, Loyiso Gola Live and State of the Nation Address.

He has also appeared on: Bunny Chow, a 2006 comedy feature film; Outrageous, a 2010 theatrically released feature length stand-up comedy; and Copposites, a 2012 comedy feature film.

In 2010 Loyiso Gola began hosting Late Night News with Loyiso Gola, an e.tv/ eNews Channel Africa (eNCA) satirical news series he co-created with fellow comedian Kagiso Lediga.

In 2011 he joined a host of celebrities to Phuket, Thailand on the third season of Tropika Island of Treasure; the other celebrity contestants were: Bonang Matheba, Dionne Song, JR, Khanyi Mbau, Snotkop and Tatum Keshwar.

In 2012 Loyiso Gola was the host of Comedy Central Presents: Live @ Parkers and appeared on The Comedy Central Roast. That same year he appeared on the episode of a short-lived Jo-Ann Strauss hosted e.tv talk show, Glambition.

In 2013 he appeared on the Nicky Greenwall hosted e.tv talk show, Screentime with Nicky Greenwall and was the subject of an episode of another Nicky Greenwall hosted show, The Close Up.

On Sunday Night of March 22, 2015 Loyiso Gola hosted the 9th Annual South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs ).

Late Night News with Loyiso Gola (LNN) was created by him (Loyiso Gola) and Kagiso Lediga. The show premiered on September 29, 2010.

Late Night News with Loyiso Gola - LNNSince it’s premier back in 2010 it has been hosted by Loyiso Gola, Kagiso Lediga, who often appears on the series is credited as creator and director.

The show’s main subject is South African politics and it has especially focused on President Jacob Zuma, Gwede Mantashe, the African National Congress (ANC), Julius Malema, Economic Freedom Fighters; it also makes a mockery of other prominent politicians and figures in including Zwelinzima Vavi, Helen Zille, Patricia de Lille among others.

The show features numerous prominent South African comedians, among them; co-creators, Loyiso Gola as host and Kagiso Lediga; David Kibuuka, Conrad Koch/ Chester Missing, Daniel Friedman, Tats Nkonzo, Tol A$$ Mo, Lazola Gola, Ntosh Madlingozi and Riaad Moosa among others.

Late Night News with Loyiso Gola has been a critical success from the beginning and has since renewed for numerous seasons.

In 2013 and 2014 Late Night News with Loyiso Gola was nominated for an International Emmy Award for best comedy series.
