Joe Mafela died in a car accident

Joe Mafela (1942 – 2017) was a South African actor, writer, producer, director, singer and businessman who was arguably best known for his portrayal of the unemployed lodger S’dumo in the Zulu language comedy series ‘Sgudi ‘Snaysi. He died on Saturday night of March 18, 2017 in a car accident in which a bakkie hit the car he was driving on the left hand side.

Joe Mafela was declared dead on the scene, this according to the Times LIVE. Johannesburg Metro police spokesperson Edna Mamonyane told Times Live that it is suspected that Joe Mafela did not die of trauma but of another condition brought on by the accident, she however said that the investigation was still underway.

“We can confirm that at 21:45 on M1 North between the Oxford and Houghton turn-offs there was an accident between a Ford Figo and a bakkie which took place in construction zone. The Bakkie hit the Ford which caused damage to the left hand side of the Ford Figo. The driver of the Figo [Mr Mafela] was declared fatal by paramedics on the scene. His fatal condition may have been a medical condition that was brought in during the accident but an investigation into this is now underway,” said Johannesburg Metro police spokesperson Edna Mamonyane.

Furthermore, a family member later confirmed the passing of Joe Mafela on Twitter in the early hours of Sunday morning of March 19, 2017. Anthony Mafela tweeting the Sowetan, Sunday World, SA Film Society and the production house, Penguin Films said “Sad News.. My Uncle Joe Mafela passed on last night”.

In recent years Joe Mafela starred on Madan & Eve as Sol. And at the time of his death he was starring in the SABC 1 popular sope opera, Generations: The Legacy where he portrayed the character of Tebogo Moroka.
