Orlando Pirates and South African Senior Men’s National Team captain Senzo Meyiwa was shot through the chest and pronounced dead on arrival at hospital on Sunday.

On Monday October 27, 2014 national police commissioner General Riah Phiyega announced that she had set up a multi-disciplinary task team made up of forensic, crime intelligence, and visible policing members to handle the murder case.

On Sunday night it was reported that R150 000 reward was being offered to the person(s) may have information that will lead to the successful capture of those involved in the shooting that resulted in the death of Senzo Meyiwa.

New reports say a R250 000 reward is being offered to the person(s) with information that will lead to the arrest and conviction of those involved in the killing of Senzo Meyiwa.

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesman Brigadier Neville Malila reportedly said that the men are believed to be between the ages of 25 and 29.

The identikits are believed to have been compiled after the police spoke to Kelly Khumalo and those who were in the house when Senzo Meyiwa was shot.

Senzo Meyiwa had come through the youth structures of the Soweto based South African football club Orlando Pirates and as of 2012/13 PSL season he had become the first choice goalkeeper.

As the beginning of Shakes Ephraim Mashaba‘s fourth spell at the helm of Bafana Bafana, Senzo Meyiwa was appointed captain of the South African Senior Men’s National Team.

In recent weeks he had taken over captaincy of his club Orlando Pirates under coach Vladimir Vermezović.

On the fateful Sunday night of October 26, 2012 at approximately 20:00 (South African time) Senzo Meyiwa met the end while visiting his girlfriend and mother of his baby daughter Kelly Khumalo.

On that fateful night two of three men entered the house in which seven people were in and demanded money, cellphones and other valuables.

One of two men who entered the house had a gun pointed at Kelly Khumalo, Senzo Meyiwa’s girlfriend who recently mothered his third daughter, Meyiwa tried to protect her and was shot in the back and the bullet exited through his chest.

It is now understood that Senzo Meyiwa was shot because when he stood up the assailants thought he was wanting to fight.

Injured Senzo Meyiwa was transported to hospital and was pronounced dead on arrival.

Senzo Meyiwa is survived by; his father Sam Meyiwa, his mother Ntombifuthi Meyiwa, his wife Mandisa Meyiwa and his three daughters (Namhla Meyiwa, Nana Meyiwa and Thingo Meyiwa).
