Gugu Zulu has died aged 38 years old

Gugu Zulu has died aged 38 years old. He died in a Tanzanian hospital in the morning of July 18, 2016 with his wife, Letshego Zulu, at his side. Gugu Zulu and his wife Letshego Zulu on Mount KilimanjaroThe Nelson Mandela Foundation confirmed that Gugu Zulu died while attempting to summit Mount Kilimanjaro after experiencing flu-like symptoms. Gugu Zulu and his wife Letshego both descended Mount Kilimanjaro when he experienced breathing problems on Sunday, this is according reports.

Gugu Zulu and his wife Letshego Zulu were part of the Trek4Mandela expedition which was led by experienced South African mountaineer, Sibusiso Vilane. In his last Facebook post, the three-times national rally champion posted he had flu-like symptoms.

“Details are sketchy. What we do know is that Gugu experienced problems breathing. The medical team supporting the trek put him on a drip and they descended the mountain with him. We are informed that the medical teams tried everything possible to save his life,” the Nelson Mandela Foundation said.

Sello Hatang, CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, said: “I am devastated. I knew him well. I recruited him to climb Kilimanjaro. The last thing he said to me at the airport before he left last week was that he wanted to speak about doing other Mandela Day projects. I feel a huge sense of loss.”

“Made it though (stet) day2. My wife is doing fabulous, she has even learnt the local language. Am having flu like symptoms and struggling with the mountain but taking it step by step!! Today we managed to see our destination and our camp is literary above the clouds!!”Gugu Zulu’s last Facebook post read.

“We are all devastated. We did not expect it to happen so quickly especially when talking about such a young life that was at its prime. His sister is now en route to Tanzania, together with a representative from the Mandela Foundation, who are going there to get the finer details,” Gugu Zulu’s uncle, Tsidiso Motloelwa, was quoted saying.

President Zuma has extended his deep condolences to the Zulu family, for the sudden passing of Mr Gugu Zulu. The president is deeply saddened by this event,”the spokesperson in the presidency, Bongani Ngqulunga, was quoted saying.
