Dullah Omar’s nephew shot dead

Shaheed Omar, nephew of the late minister Dullah Omar, has been shot dead in an apparent attempted hijacking in Lansdowne, Cape Town on Thursday night. Dullah Omar became Minister of Justice in South Africa in Nelson Mandela’s ANC government, and was the first cabinet minister appointed Acting President in the absence of both the President and Deputy President from South Africa.

“Circumstances surrounding a shooting incident last night at about 20:30 on the corners of Lansdowne Road and Jan Smuts Road, Lansdowne where a 38-year-old man was fatally wounded are under investigation. A murder case was registered for investigation,” police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk said on Friday.

“Anyone with any information about this fatal shooting incident is kindly requested to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.”

Earlier this month the Omar family released a statement critical of the state of the country and it’s leadership, “No inducement of position, power or personal enrichment was powerful enough to change him. This contrasts sharply with the behaviour and actions in recent years of many ANC leaders and members, up to and including President Jacob Zuma.”
