Costa Rica produced another shock defeat at the 2014 Fifa World Cup

Costa Rica produced another shock defeat at the 2014 Fifa World Cup when the trounced Uruguay 3-1 at Estádio Castelão, Fortaleza. Uruguay who finished fourth at the 2010 Fifa World Cup held in South Africa 4 years ago were widely tipped to come out on top but it wasn’t to be.

Costa Rica v UruguayCosta Rica may be no pushovers generally when you consider that they are in the top 30 on the Fifa rankings but they are certainly lesser known compared to their victims Uruguay.

In the Costa Rica squad Joel Campbell is perhaps the only stand out name, an Arsenal man who has spent time being bounced around all over Europe.

In the game against Uruguay he was more than just a handful, he owned the game and dictated the terms going forward, more often than not he left the Uruguay defense in sixes and sevens.

While Uruguay had all sorts of talent and star power including 2010 Fifa World Cup player of the tournament Diego Forlán and Paris Saint-Germain forward Edinson Cavani.

It was that Cavani who opened the scoring when he netted from the penalty spot for Uruguay on the 24th minute. Just 9 minutes into the second half, Joel Campbell struck, he equalized on the 54th minute and it was downhill from there for Uruguay.

Just 3 minutes later, Óscar Duarte scored a second one for the underdogs Costa Rica. Marco Ureña killed off the match with his 84th minute goal and secured a 3-1 victory for Costa Rica.

In an earlier match Colombia delivered a masterclass to Greece when they steamrolled them by 3 goals to nil. Greece had no answers for the Colombian unrelenting onslaught.
Pablo Armero scored the first goal just 5 minutes into the match and the Greek never recovered, Teófilo Gutiérrez score the second after 58 minutes of play and the third and final goal came from Teófilo Gutiérrez in stoppage time.
