Chippa United top the Absa Premiership table after first round

Chippa United top the Absa Premiership table after first round of play in the Absa Premiership of the 2014/2015 Premier Soccer League (PSL) season. The 2014/2015 season officially began last week with the 2014 MTN 8 and this past Friday, August 8, the Absa Premiership began with the defending champions, Mamelodi Sundowns welcoming Maritzburg United to Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

Chippa UnitedMamelodi Sundowns scored in the second minute of the match through Katlego Mashego and led for the entire match only to concede a penalty in the dying minutes of the match. Maritzburg United’s Mohammed Awal made no mistake as he equalized for the visitors.

On Saturday August 9, 2013 five matches were played, eight goals were scored and 15 points were earned. Kaizer Chiefs took a trip to Free State province to play Free State Stars at Charles Mopeli Stadium. Free State Stars who spent the best part of the 2013/2014 season languishing at the bottom of the table lost 1-0 after 54th minute George Lebese goal.

Polokwane City were away where defeated home side Pretoria University 1-0 at Tuks Stadium. Chippa United, who are returning to the Premier Soccer League after being relegated following a trying debut season in 2012/2013, welcomed 2013/2014 season double winners Platinum Stars who had just embarrassed league champions out of the MTN 8.

Prior to the match, which was played at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape, if Platinum Stars performance against Mamelodi Sundowns would have been anything to go by, they would have been widely tipped to be the victors after 90 minutes especially when you consider that they had time to get a week earlier in the MTN 8. In the 9th minute Andile Mbenyane put Chippa United ahead and in the 27th minute David Zulu doubled Chippa United’s lead.

Platinum Stars never recovered and never scored. Their failure to find the back of the net as well as the failure of the other teams to match or surpass Chippa United’s +2 goal difference put Chippa United on top of the Absa Premiership standings after the first round of play and condemns Platinum Stars to the relegation zone.

Moroka Swallows defeated Orlando Pirates 2-1 at Orlando Stadium while Supersport United lost to BidVest Wits 1-0 at Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium .

On Sunday August 10, 2013 AmaZulu played to a goalless draw against Ajax Cape Town at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, KwaZulu Natal. Bloemfontein Celtic welcomed Mpumalanga Black Aces to Free State Stadium, Tendai Ndoro put Black Aces in front just before half time in referee added time and in the 54th minute Joel Mogorosi put Bloem Celtic back on level terms, the match finished 1-1 and conclude the first round of the 2014/2015 Absa Premiership.
