They won the 1995 CAF Champions League (at the time African Cup of Champions Clubs) and later appeared in the 2013 CAF Champions League final where the lost 3-1 on aggregate to Al Ahly. In the 2014/15 Premier Soccer League season Orlando Pirates limped along only reaching the 2014 MTN 8 final to lose to arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs and only managing a fourth place finish in the league. This means they have failed to qualify for any CAF competition in the year 2016.

In the first leg of the semi-final Orlando Pirates narrowly beat Al Ahly 1-0 at Orlando Stadium before traveling to Egypt where all expectation pointed to their defeat. At one point it looked as though Al Ahly was well on their way to the final leading by 2-0 before the South African outfit scored 3 times. Al Ahly scored one more in stoppage time to equalize but Orlando Pirates scored once more to secure a second consecutive victory over Al Ahly.
