Carmel Fisher

Carmel Fisher is a South African actress, dancer, model and television presenter best known for her roles as promiscuous student Roxanne Campbell in the e.tv soapie Backstage, from 2005-2007 and also played the role of a young mother, Brenda in the SABC1 youth drama series Soul Buddyz.

Carmel Fisher was born  in the township of Horseshoe in Johannesburg in the Gauteng province of South Africa.

Carmel Fisher is a celebrated South African Actress, MC, Voice-Over Artist & Television Presenter well-known for her convincing performances in challenging roles on some of SA’s biggest Television shows and Film productions.

Carmel is a daughter of Desiree, a bank area-manager, and Rodney Fisher, a tradesman in the engineering field and she has an older brother, Sylvester Fisher.

She trained as a ballet dancer from age five following the RAD (Royal Academy of Dance) method and completed her training up to the Elementary Grade with Spanish Dance and Modern Contemporary part of the syllabus.

Carmel attended the National School of Arts with Dance as a major and also partook in many of the school productions focusing on both dance and drama, including Dance Umbrella, Annie and Fiddler on the Roof.

However, due to a knee injury she was compelled to take a year off from dancing to recover and this lead to her changing schools.


She joined Sir John Adamson Secondary School and participated in the anti-apartheid drama piece, Makhavane, which competed against many other schools in the annual RAPPS Drama Competition, including the National School of Arts, and won in 1998.

Carmel went to RAU (now called University of Johannesburg) and completed a degree in Corporate Communication while simultaneously featuring in television commercials and theatre productions.

In 2004 she was the female winner of a competition called Backstage Superstar, which landed her a year-long role to portray the character of, Roxanne Campbell on the e.tv soapie.

But the producers of Backstage renewed her annual contract for three successive years, despite the fact that she only won a year-long initial contract.

Apart from featuring on television programmes, Carmel also made appearances in theatre productions like The King & I (an offering from ‘Packed-House Productions’, directed by Genna Lewis) & in films like the internationally-released & award-winning South African film (Best South African Film- Durban International Film Festival 2008) Triomf, produced & directed by Michael Raeburn. She also played Mosca, (the lead), in The Fox, a film based on Ben Johnson’s play Volpone .

Carmel also models & is a T.V Presenter. She has presented shows such as DSTV’s Channel O on an interactive music video show called ‘OBOMA’ as well as on Supersport for ‘PSL TV’.

Television

In 2004 she won the Backstage Superstar competition, that earned her a role as Roxanne Campbell in the youth soap opera that starred Lorcia Cooper, Grace Mahlaba, Baby Cele and Katlego Danke.

In 2007 Carmel Fisher  was cast in a lead role of SABC 1 popular youth drama, Soul Buddyz, where she portrayed the character of Brenda a young mother who lost her daughter in the car accident.

In 2011 Carmel showed her competitive, adaptable & courageous nature and ability to ‘rough-it’ when she joined other celebrities on Mnet’s most recent edition of SURVIVOR: Maldives- Celebs VS Plebs. She was the fifth celebrity voted out and Carmel takes comfort in the fact that the general consensus between the tribe mates was that she was too strong; too much of a threat physically, mentally & emotionally.

In 2012 was in the feature film, SNARE where Carmel portray the character, ZARA, the city girl with the mysterious past turned rural, ‘self-proclaimed, rhino-protection ranger.

High RollersIn 2013 she was cast as Cindy on, Generations a law student on the show was part of a polygamous association headed by Luthuli Dlamini’s character, Scott.

Starring alongside Menzi Ngubane, Luthuli Dlamini, Winnie Ntshaba, Seputla Sebogodi and Patrick Shai, it was not the first time on the popular soapie back in 2004 she had a minor role as a Nurse on the soap opera.

In 2013 she was cast on SABC 3 drama series, High Rollers as Michelle starring alongside Antony Coleman, Fezile Mpela, Rolanda Marais, Xolile Tshabalala and Kevin Smith.

Personal life

Carmel pregCarmel Fisher is a relationship with a property developer Dion Gabrielides, from April 2011 and they expecting their first baby due in May this year. In an interview she said “Dion, and her only found out about it when she was already eight weeks along.”
