Buhle Samuels is a South African television personality and actress who is best known for her portrayal of the villainous “Matshidiso Mofokeng” on SABC 2’s flagship soap opera, Muvhango.

Buhle Samuels was born in the Soweto township of Johannesburg in the Gauteng province of South Africa.

She grew up in Pretoria North with her parents and her older sister, this is according to a Sunday World article titled “Buhle brings magic to Muvhango”.

Buhle Samuels is the youngest of two children; she has an older sister named Mbali Samuels.

Her mother is a nurse, “my mom is a nurse in Saudi Arabia and she is always listening to the news and she calls me to see if everything is okay. She stresses and worries more than me,” she was quoted by the Sunday World.

Buhle Samuels studied Somatology, this is according to a Cosmopolitan South Africa article titled “The Woman Behind Muvhango’s Trending Butt” however, it is unclear when or where.

It has been reported that she used to own a mobile beauty salon, “For a while Buhle owned a mobile beauty salon”, this is according to the same Cosmopolitan South Africa article.

Buhle Samuels previously hosted the breakfast show on Africa Magic, an M-Net owned channel available on DStv, “she began a gig as a breakfast show presenter on Africa Magic,” Cosmopolitan SA.

She shot to prominence in 2014 when she was cast as Matshidiso Mofokeng on the SABC 2 flagship soap opera, Muvhango, reportedly ahead of seasoned South African actresses and television personalities who had auditioned for the role to no success.

 

 

Muvhango, 2014 – to date

In 2014 Buhle Samuels joined the cast of SABC 2’s Muvhango where she portrays the character of Matshidiso Mofokeng who has been described by the media as “femme fatale”.

It has been reported that the producers of Muvhango had seen Buhle Samuels audition for the Lion King and thought she would be suitable for the role of Matshidiso.

“I was called by the producers because they had seen me audition for Lion King. I had three intense auditions before I finally got the role,” the Sunday World quoted.

Buhle Samuels was reportedly cast as Matshidiso ahead of the likes of Bonang Matheba, Lerato Kganyago and Terry Phetho, this is according to a Sunday World article titled “Buhle brings magic to Muvhango”.

She told the Sunday World that when she was cast she thought it was a small role and was grateful for the humble beginnings, “I had no idea of the magnitude of this role; I only found out after I had accepted it. I remember thinking: ‘Buhle, what have you done?’ But I am ready for it,” she was quoted.

In 2015 at the 2nd Annual Royalty Soapie Awards Buhle Samuels was nominated for “Best Newcomer” for her portrayal of Matshidiso Mofokeng on Muvhango, she however lost to Izak Davel who plays the role of Bradley Haines on SABC 3’s Isidingo.

 

  • Matshidiso’s Buttocks

In November 2014 Buhle Samuels character, Matshidiso Mofokeng, trended on Twitter due to a tight fitting dress she wore which accentuated the shape of her buttocks.

Buhle Samuels as MatshidisoThe frenzy over Matshidiso’s buttocks soon moved to mainstream South African tabloid media, mostly online, as they capitalized on the topic that seemed to trend perpetually.

Amid claims that her buttocks were enhanced she responded, “let me set the record straight, I don’t use body enhancers, I have a natural behind many people appreciate as a South African and African woman,” as quoted by the Sunday World.

Since then Matshidiso’s buttocks have inspired a female underwear called “Matshidiso” – named after the Muvhango character, a “bum pad” which is reportedly sold by informal traders in Johannesburg and Pretoria in the Gauteng province.

Talking about the undergarment Buhle Samuels was quoted saying “I don’t have a problem with the name. Matshidiso is only my stage name. It ends there.”

She went on to say, “here is nothing wrong in using the underwear; women want to look perfect and attractive.”

“I really want to concentrate on my acting. This thing is rather distracting personally, but for the character Matshidiso and Muvhango, it’s good mileage,” Buhle Samuels was quoted saying.
