Bongumusa Mthembu and Eleanor Greenwood at 2014 Comrades Marathon

Bongumusa Mthembu and Eleanor Greenwood won their respective categories at the 2014 Comrades Marathon. Bongumusa Mthembu won the men’s category, his maiden Comrades Marathon title.

This year’s marathon, a down run, from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, Mthembu came in first, comfortably ahead of previous winner Ludwick Mamabolo.

Mthembu, The Nedbank runner and winner of three previous gold, crossed the finishing line in a time of five hours, 28 minutes and 34 seconds (5:28.34).

He is from Bulwer just outside Pietermaritzburg in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.

Mthembu took the lead just before Cowies Hill, about 17km before the Kingsmead Stadium, where the down run finishes, and never looked back, finishing strongly, about 5 minutes ahead of second placedĀ  Ludwick Mamabolo, on his way to claiming the R350 000 top-prize.

Eleanor Greenwood, British-born Canadian runner, came from behind to beat 8 times winner Elena Nurgalieva to the number one position in six hours, 18 minutes and 15 seconds (6:18:15).
