Bongani Masondo

Bongani Masondo is a South African actor best known for his starring roles as Bafana “Prince” Shabalala in the SABC1 drama series Tshisa, from 2006-2012 and Skeem Saam as Babymaker.

Bongani Masondo was born on  in Katlehong, East Rand and grew up in Daveyton, Johannesburg,Gauteng province of South Africa..

He attended Bekimfundo Primary School and obtained his matric in 2001 at Donville high school in Germiston.

Bongani enrolled at then RAU now University of Johannesburg, where he studied economic science.

After a year at RAU, he rebelled against his parents for the first time in his life.

He fought with them for a week, because he wanted to go and study at AFDA, he went to obtain a BA Degree in Live Performance at AFDA.

Bongani loves art and believes in its power to transform. Even school he was doing drama and sang in the choir. At Rau he started to explore contemporary dance.

He, Bongani is also a musician he is also a member of a band called Coloured Black.

With a mixture  of beatboxing, rap, singing, poetry and  without accompaniment.

Bongani  rose to through the SABC 1 youth drama series, Tshisa in 2006.

He and fellow Tshisa actor, Innocent Masuku who plays Baksteen, his best friend and foil in the series became close friends even in real life.

Where he cast to portray the character of Bafana “Prince” Tshabalala and troubled young fighting drug addiction. And brother who steals the love of his life on the show.

In the story, Bafana and Baksteen recorded some kwaito tracks together and before shooting began they went in to the studio to record the Tshisa title track as well as a second tune, Bigger Than Us.

In an interview Bongani said “I got inspiration from the message in the script. Innocent also came with a lot of ideas.”


In 2006 Bongani Masondo was cast on the SABC 1 youth drama series to portray, Bafana “Prince” Tshabalala alongside Melusi Yeni, Innocent Masuku, Mbali Mlotshwa, Pam Andrews and Manaka Ranaka.

In 2007 was cast on SABC 1 drama series Society to portray the character of, Thabang that stars Lele Ledwaba, Sibulele Gcilitshana, Samantha Tyelbooi and Zandile Msutwana.

In 2014 was cast on SABC 1 youth soap opera Skeem Saam to portray the character of Mangaliso “Babymaker” Sangweni alongside Amanda du-Pont, Eric Macheru, Mogau Motlhatswi, Thabo Mamabolo,Clement Maosa and Natasha Thahane.

Personal Life

Bongani graduated to be a Sangoma in 2011 at Margate, in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, Kwanzimakhwe and received his training to be a Sangoma under Makhosi Dlamini.
