Glamour Magazine Cover Controversy

On Monday November 17, 2014 Bonang Matheba took to Instagram to announce that she would be on the cover of the December 2014 issue of the Glamour South Africa Magazine.

Bonang Matheba on the cover of Glamour Magazine“bonang_m Proud to announce!!! 1st black star on the cover of Glamour South Africa!! December 2014 issue goes on sale TODAY!! Hair by @saadique.. Photographed by Steve Tanchel #BreakingTheRules” She wrote on her Instagram account.

As with all things involving “Race”, “Media” and “Celebrities” the news were met with varied reactions.

Bonang Matheba was particularly displeased with a blogger named Phil Mphela who was quoted saying: “I actually found it insulting to black talent that everyone thought this was some history making milestone. Ya’ll know I am team Bonang all the way. However, my love and respect for the industry comes first and this racist exploitation of black faces in the magazine industry is abhorrent.

“Black magazines do not pay black celebrities for covers. White magazines only use people like Bonang on their covers when they need publicity…You are all just puppets including people like Bonang who have essentially become “rent a black” talent”.

Bonang Matheba took to twitter to express her displeasure “@PhilMphela so many people have expressed their disappointment with Glamour, but none of them have called me names. O tla nyela [you will sh*t]  doll face”.

“I will not allow you to diss black people, including myself, when we already have to work f***** hard”
