All the big guns registered convincing victories

All the big guns registered convincing victories in the 3rd and final rounds of group A and B at the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil. In the match where the defending world champions took on Australia, it was those who were snubbed in the two previous defeats who seemed to diverge from the Tiki-taka; Fernando Torres, David Villa and Santi Cazorla provided the sting that the Tiki-taka needed so desperately in the previous two matches.

Most disappointingly for Vicente Del Bosque was to see how effective the changes he made were, Spain recorded a convincing 3-0 victory against Australia. Spain goals came from David Villa (36′), Fernando Torres (69′) and Juan Mata (82′).

In the Netherlands game, perhaps clear that Chile is not a weak team but what was clearer is that Spain either got their tactics wrong or they are truly face to face with the end of an era.

HernandezNetherlands made an easy meal of Chile by 2 goals to no response, avoiding a meeting with Brazil in a process. Their goals came from Leroy Fer (77′) and Memphis Depay (90+2′).

In the Group A encounters it was the hosts who had a lot to prove after they were crippled by Mexico in their second match. Brazil faced home bound Cameroon at Estádio Nacional Mané Garrincha, Brasília while Croatia faced Mexico who needed either a draw or a victory to move to the last 16, their match took place at Arena Pernambuco, Recife.

Fernando TorresBrazil were expected to walk all over disjointed and out of sorts Cameroon. In the opening stages of the match Cameroon seemed to show glimpses of excellence and fighting spirit.

Cameroon’s early showings seemed to unsettle the Brazilians, on the 17th minute Neymar Jr. struck and put the hosts ahead. Just 9 minutes later, Cameroon answered on the 26th minute when Joël Matip of Schalke 04 scored.

Fer+DepayIt took Neymar Jr. a further 9 minute to put the hosts ahead again when he scored on the 35th minute. The second half belonged to Brazil who run Cameroon out of the field and out of the world. Fred ended his scoring drought on the 49th minute and Fernando Luiz Roza finished off Cameroon on the 84th minute. Brazil beat Cameroon by 4-1.

Mexico walked all over Croatia, at one point it was not unthinkable that they might finish on top of Group A but it wasn’t be as they failed to score past 3 goals and further failed to prevent Croatia from scoring.

All goals of Croatia vs Mexico match came in the twilight of the match. Mexico’s goals came from Rafael Márquez (72′), Andrés Guardado (75′) and Javier Hernández (82′) while the Croatia goal came from Ivan Perišić (87′. Mexico won the match by 3-1 and finished second on Group A behind Brazil.
