2015 MTN 8

The 2015 MTN 8 was the 41st edition of the Top 8 tournament (known as the MTN 8 for sponsorship reasons) which is sanctioned by the Premier Soccer League of South Africa. The start of the 2015 MTN 8 marked the official start of the 2015/16 Premier Soccer League season on August 04, 2015.

The MTN 8 cup competition is contested among eight teams which form part of the “top 8” teams in the league in the previous season; the competition starts with a single elimination round of matches in the quarter-finals and those matches are pre-determined based on the position of each team on the league table.

The 2015 MTN 8 is one of three South African Premier Soccer League cup competitions with the exception that it is not open to all teams but on those that finish in the top eight of the league in the previous season.

The 2015 MTN 8 is scheduled to get underway on Tuesday of August 04, 2015 with a match between Orlando Pirates and Ajax Cape Town at Orlando Stadium as well as the Match between BidVest Wits and SuperSport United at BidVest Stadium – both matches are taking place in Johannesburg.

On Wednesday August 05, 2015 Kaizer Chiefs will face Maritzburg United at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg while Mamelodi Sundowns will be hosting Bloemfontein Celtic at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria.

The 2015 MTN 8 marked the start of the official season with Ajax Cape Town defeating Orlando Pirates 1-0 at Orlando Stadium on August 04, 2015 in a match which started on 19:30. In a match played concurrently BidVest Wits beat SuperSport United 3-1 after extra time at BidVest Stadium.

On Wednesday August 05, 2015 the 2015 MTN 8 continued with the match between Kaizer Chiefs and Maritzburg United at FNB Stadium where the former defeated the latter 5-3 after extra time.

The fourth and final quarter-final match was contested between Mamelodi Sundowns and Bloemfontein Celtic at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria. Mamelodi Sundowns open the scoring in extra time but Bloemfontein Celtic equalized and went on to win the match 2-4 on penalties.

 

 

  • The Semi-final

In the two legged semi-final Ajax Cape Town faced BidVest Wits while Bloemfontein Celtic faced defending champions, Kaizer Chiefs. The first leg of the first semi-final took place on Saturday night of August 15, 2015 at 20:15 between Ajax Cape Town and BidVest Wits at Coetzenburg Stadium in Stellenbosch in the Western Cape; the match was played to a 1-1 draw. The first leg of the second semi-final took place on Sunday afternoon of August 16, 2015 at 15:00 at Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein in the Free State. The match was played to a 1-all draw.

The second leg of the second semi-final took place on Saturday night of August 29, 2015 at 20:15 at FNB Stadium between Kaizer Chiefs and Bloemfontein Celtic. Kaizer Chiefs beat Bloemfontein Celtic 1-0 to secure passage to the 2015 MTN 8 final through a 2-1 win on aggregate. The second leg of the first semi-final took place on Sunday afternoon of August 30, 2015 at 15:00 at BidVest Stadium between BidVest Wits and Ajax Cape Town where the latter secured a 0-1 victory and a date with Kaizer Chiefs in the final.

 

 

The 2015 MTN 8 final was contested between Ajax Cape Town and Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday afternoon of September 19, 2015 at 15:00 at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in the city of Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape. Ajax Cape Town defeated Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 through a Nathan Paulse 59th minute penalty goal. The title was the first for Ajax Cape Town.
