2014 Telkom Knockout

The 2014 Telkom Knockout is a Premier Soccer League (PSL) sanctioned single elimination football cup competition featuring all 16 premiership football clubs. The first round draw for the 2014 Telkom Knockout cup was held on Monday September 22, 2014 and all PSL clubs that are considered “big” missed one another.

The 2014 Telkom Knockout tournament commenced on Friday October 03, 2014 with a clash between BidVest Wits and Moroka Swallows at the BidVest Stadium at the University of the Witwatersrand in Milpark Johannesburg.

BidVest Wits were coming to the match on the back of the 2-0 victory over struggling Durban side, AmaZulu in the Absa Premiership, while Moroka Swallows went to the match on the back of the disappointing 3-2 defeat at the hands of Free State Stars.

In the only match played on Friday night, BidVest Wits outplayed and defeated Moroka Swallows 3-0 and became the firs team to secure a spot in the last 8.

On Saturday October 04, 2014 five matches were played. At 15:00; Roger Sikhakhane of Chippa United was handed his first defeat of his third in charge of the Port Elizabeth side.

Chippa United was defeated 1-0 by Platinum Stars at Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Phokeng in the North West.

Gordon Igesund registered his third consecutive victory in charge of Supersport United as the narrowly defeated Free State Stars 1-0.

Mamelodi Sundowns defeated University of Pretoria 2-1 in extra-time.

In the 20:15 matches; Kaizer Chiefs, who have only conceded 1 goal in all competitions this season and is yet to be defeated hosted Maritzburg United at FNB Stadium and won that match 1-0.

AmaZulu, who were under the guidance of assistant coach Wilfred Mugeyi as a result of Craig Rosslee being away after being reportedly harassed by fans during a training session, pulled a rabbit in the hat on Bloemfontein Celtic who were 8 minutes away from victory with a solid 2-0 lead.

Marc van Heerden scored one for the history books on the 82nd minute giving AmaZulu a glimmer of hope, Khulekani Madondo completed the comeback as he put Usuthu on level terms and in the 3rd minute of extra-time Bornwell Mwape put AmaZulu in front and they held for their first victory of the season.

On Sunday October 05, 2014 at 15:00 Ajax Cape Town humiliated Mpumalanga Black Aces 3-0 at Cape Town Stadium and Orlando Pirates beat Polokwane City 2-1 at Orlando Stadium.

  • Quarter-finals

On Saturday October 25, 2014 BidVest Wits were narrowly defeated by Supersport United at the BidVest Stadium. At 17:30 on the same day, Mamelodi Sundowns defeated AmaZulu by 2-1 after extra-time.

At 20:00 at Orlando Stadium, Orlando Pirates hosted Ajax Cape Town in a night overwhelmed with relentless rainfall. Orlando Pirates saw the return of defense maestro Rooi Mahamutsa to the starting line-up while Tlou Segolela became part of the squad for the first time in the 2014/15 PSL season.

Inspired Orlando Pirates in scintillating form ran rampant against Ajax Cape Town who were devoid of answers. Orlando Pirates won 4-1 and progressed to the semi-final. Orlando Pirates victory  meant they will their sixth consecutive semi-final appearance Рthe feat spanning two seasons.

On Sunday October 26, 2014 Kaizer Chiefs was shocked by Platinum Stars on penalties after the match ended in a goalless draw. Kaizer Chiefs had not lost a match since the beginning of the 2014/15 PSL season.

  • Senzo Meyiwa

The washed away Saturday night October 25, 2014 Orlando Pirates vs Ajax Cape Town match marked Senzo Meyiwa final football match.

On Sunday night October 26, 2014 Senzo Meyiwa was shot and later died from that gunshot wound approximately 24 hours since playing that match.

  • Semi-final

On Saturday November 08, 2014 at 20:00 Orlando Pirates returned to the field of play, they hosted Supersport United at Orlando Stadium – their very first match since the fall of their number one goalkeeper and captain, Senzo Meyiwa.

Brighton Mhlongo wore number 16 at goals – the position last played by Senzo Meyiwa; Oupa Manyisa took over the captaincy. Orlando Pirates were defeated 2-0 by Supersport United and failed to reach a cup final for the first time in over a year.

On Sunday November 9, 2014 Platinum Stars defeated Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 at Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Phokeng in the North West and reached the Telkom Knockout final for the second consecutive time.

On Saturday November 29, 2014 at 3pm (15:00) the 2014 Telkom Knockout final between Supersport United and Platinum Stars was held at Orlando Stadium in Orlando East, Soweto, Johannesburg, Gauteng in South Africa.

Supersport United came from behind through Clayton Daniels penalty and later took the through another Clayton Daniels penalty before Thuso Phala broke the 2-2 deadlock to grant his Pretoria side (Supersport United) a 3-2 victory over Platinum Stars. Supersport United’s victory marked their maiden League (Telkom Knockout) Cup title.
