The Metro FM Music Awards is an annual award ceremony organized by Metro FM, the biggest commercial radio station of the South African Broadcasting Corporation Radio (SABC Radio).

The awards form part of the major music awards in the country; the nomination is one of the most sought after honours by South African musician – even more so – a win.

The earliest known media report on the 15th edition of the Metro FM Music Awards was on Wednesday of November 11, 2015 in a press briefing held at Maharani Hotel in the city of Durban in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa.

In attendance at that press briefing were Metro FM and SuperSport personality Robert Marawa, Amon Mokoena, Pearl Modiadie and Pearl Thusi among others. It was revealed that all winners at the 15th Annual Metro FM Music Awards will walk away with a prize money of R100,000.00.

“Now that it has got monies rolling I can vouch that we are going to have more media queries about people already suggesting that there is going to be riggings and unfortunately the awards are voted for by you the public therefore there is not going to be any riggings,”  SABC spokesman, Kaizer Kganyago, was quoted saying.

The SABC Radio general manager, Leuba Ramakgolo, also revealed that a new category will be added to the list. It is intended to honour musician (s) from the African continent. “This is in the spirit of oneness as we believe that we are one Africa,” Leuba Ramakgolo was quoted saying.

On Thursday of January 14, 2016 a final complete list of nominees was revealed in Fourways in the city of Johannesburg in the Gauteng province. The official announcement of the nominees meant the voting had also opened and will close on February 14, 2016. Nathi, famous for his hit single “Nomvula”, and his debut album – Buyelekhaya – received five nominations followed by Riky Rick, Emtee and DJ Sphectacula & DJ Naves with four and Zonke with three nominees among other multiple nominees.
